Your Ship, Your Map, Your Compass: Living in the Here and Now

Jun 27, 2023

Actors, we’re embarking on a journey, sailing aboard the ship of our lives, armed with our trusty map and compass. In the past, our compass guided us, helping us navigate the storms and winds that threatened our sails. Our map assured us of safe havens, urging us to follow its tried-and-true path.

But now, a new approach awaits us. We find ourselves in a different moment, a moment of learning. As we gaze upon the horizon, we notice a serene blue sky, witness birds soaring in a particular direction, and feel the warmth of the wind. We are attuned to the present, gathering information from what is happening here and now, rather than relying solely on the echoes of the past.

The past, we realise, may not accurately reflect our present reality. Its whispers might mislead us, rooted in outdated expectations and disconnected from the truth of the moment. We recognize that as we embark on this voyage, it is not about conquering every island hastily, but rather about immersing ourselves in the experience.

As we set sail, we begin to observe the world around us from the deck of our ship. We appreciate the vibrant blue sky, the shimmering water, and the potential sources of sustenance. Our focus shifts to finding the next island that can offer us respite, where we can rest and rejuvenate for a brief moment in time.

It’s not about rushing through our journey, ticking off destinations like items on a checklist, proclaiming, “I’ve done Europe!” Instead, we seek to truly experience each place we encounter. Did we witness the awe-inspiring sunrises and breathtaking sunsets? What memories do we carry with us, etched into the core of our being?

In this process, we actively create memories and meaningful experiences. Every sight, every sound, every touch informs the vivid imagery that paints a tapestry of sensations and emotions. It is through these lived moments that we gain true insight and understanding, enriching our voyage and shaping the course of our lives.
