The Artists Time is an Organic Time

acting practice Jun 20, 2023

Actors, when you're engaged in a relationship with the present moment, especially as an artist, you anchor your sense of self there. It's not possible to anchor your identity solely on a nine-to-five job with a predetermined plan and trajectory for the future. As an artist, your journey involves continuous learning, climbing up or across the ladder, or even moving sideways—whatever direction suits your path. Your connection with life revolves around capturing moments, as chance encounters in a café or restaurant can unexpectedly spark something extraordinary. This is different from how most people approach their careers and livelihoods; for you, it's an entirely distinct way of living.

Living as an artist means existing in organic time, where you must respond to the moment at hand. Others may let moments slip by without consequence because they have their reliable nine-to-five routine from Monday to Friday. However, your work as an artist doesn't adhere to that structure. You may encounter opportunities when you least expect them, such as attending a play, a festival, or a screening. Engaging with these experiences requires your presence and awareness. Moreover, your artistic profession demands that you fully embrace and experience life itself. It's not just about turning on your artistry during auditions or on film sets. Your approach to life and how you relate to it is what nourishes your artistic essence. I speak to you as an artist because this perspective alters your relationship with time.

In many ways, your career transcends time. It isn't bound by specific periods because you have the privilege of portraying characters from various walks of life and spanning different age groups. I believe that as you delve deeper into the circle of life that encompasses your artistic journey, you'll discover that the centre for you resides in the present moment. From this centre, you can gradually respond to the future, taking step by step. This way of living is profoundly creative. I encourage you to embrace it fully so that you can not only survive but thrive in your artistic endeavours.
