It's not about a safe space, it's about a trusted space!

Actors, the body needs a really trusted space, not a safe space. 

We don’t want to create a “safe space” because for many of us “safe” means stay the same and “stay safe” can mean “do all our own habits” because the body is going “oh I feel safe if it’s just like it was all along”.

It’s not a “safe space” we’re looking for. 

We’re looking for a trusted space.

A space where you can build trust, attunement, connection, trust. 

And that’s why when you’re walking onto a film set with subject matter that’s tricky with a whole load of actors that are heavy hitters and really experienced, that’s not a safe space. 

So what you need to build is trust and how do you build trust?

The 1st thing is you need to know where you are. What do I see? What do we hear? What do I touch? that feels okay, feels pleasurable, feels good.

And then you need to connect to where you are. 

Okay, I’ve got this anxiousness coming up. Okay, what does that have to do with my character? Now we have attunement and connection. And now trust starts to come.

And now you can start to trust yourself no matter what because you know how to regulate yourself. 

You’re not looking for affirmation from the director or, you know, you can use, I feel intimidated, okay, and how does this relate to character?

How is the character intimidated? You can use everything because your humanity is the exact same humanity as the chtaracter in a way. 

So yeah, the body is complex, beautifully exquisitely complex.
