Thrive not just Survive: Flourishing as an Actor Beyond the Notion of Suffering

acting practice Jun 21, 2023

Actors, I wish for you to realise that you don’t have to endure suffering to be an artist. The notion that artists must suffer is misguided. The only suffering that arises is from lacking the necessary framework to express yourself in your chosen art form.

But here’s the truth: you already possess an innate sensitivity and unique sensibility that sets you apart from the average person. Your perception of the world and your ability to feel deeply are unlike those who work in banking, law, or medicine.

Imagine, for a moment, having your level of sensitivity and sensibility and performing daily surgeries. It simply wouldn’t work; it wouldn’t be feasible. Your sensitivity and sensibility are the very essence of your artistic nature.

So, you don’t need to suffer in order to tap into your artistry. Any beliefs you may have inherited or unconsciously adopted about suffering as a prerequisite for being an artist, it’s time to let them go. We’ll open the door, let those beliefs fly out, and then close the door, declaring them unnecessary from now on.
