You have a gift that is a responsibility

If you can write and if you’re an artist, it’s a particular way of seeing the world and paying attention to the world around you. You have a gift that is a responsibility, because you have a way of articulating things that other people don’t. They don’t have the time, or it just isn’t their gift — their gift is something else. But you’ve been given this gift. So when you feel, “I’m not sure if this is any good,” it isn’t about it being any good.
It has nothing to do with being good. Like an actor asked me today, “Should I be in this industry? Am I a good actor?” And I said: It’s not about being a good or a bad actor. It’s about: Are you interested in people? Are you interested in the world around you? Do you have a sensitivity that has compassion and empathy, and a desire to go deeper — to build a relationship with life and experience it so you can be in discovery? It’s about a desire to learn. It’s a frame of mind.
