YES, I NEED THIS

Here's what to expect:

A practice that transforms both your creative process and your relationship with yourself

The Actor’s Practice is a compassionate, deeply transformative approach to the craft of acting.

It is designed to help you become more grounded and confident in your process, more alive to the world of the story, and more willing to risk, play and follow your creative impulses.

This is not about giving you another technique to get “right.”

It is about developing an unshakable relationship with your own creative process so that whether you are walking into an audition, a rehearsal room, onto a film set or onto a stage, you have a practice you can trust.

Through scene work, voicework, nervous system regulation and Helena’s unique approach to story, you will learn to integrate the creative mind and creative body, building the capacity to be present, receptive and deeply connected to the imaginative circumstances of the story.

  • Acting Class Once a Week with Helena

At the heart of the programme is the practical work of acting.

You will work with the world of the story, exploring how to develop and deepen your relationship with character through the moments that emerge from the play or script.

You will learn to speak both from your character and about your character, developing the ability to articulate what you are discovering in your work.

    This matters.

Once you have been cast and have spent time living with a character, you have developed an intimate knowledge of them. Rather than arriving in the rehearsal room waiting to be told what to do, you can enter into a genuine creative dialogue with the director.

The work develops your ability to build belief in the story so that, when you step onto a set or stage, your imagination, sensation, emotion, thinking and perception are already alive with its world.

The aim is not to manufacture a performance.

It is to create the conditions in which something can genuinely happen to you.

  •  Learn to work with your nervous system, not against it

Actors are continually asked to be vulnerable and creatively available in environments that can also be highly pressurised.

Auditions. Rehearsal rooms. Film sets. Opening nights. Waiting. Rejection. Exposure.

That is why nervous system regulation is integral to this work.

You will learn how to remain alive, receptive, at ease and vulnerable while working in intense creative environments.

You will explore how to move clearly into and out of character, and how to recognise and work with the fight, flight and freeze responses that can arise around performance and creative impulse.

Rather than trying to eliminate anxiety, self-criticism or uncertainty, you will develop the capacity to notice them, include them and work creatively with what is already present.

The result is not less feeling.

    It is greater capacity.

Greater capacity for complexity. For vulnerability. For pleasure. For play. And for the unknown.

  • From intensity to complexity

Over the past seven years, Helena has brought increasingly detailed nervous system work into her practice with actors.

She began doing so after recognising how profoundly performance anxiety and personal anxiety could affect an actor’s creative freedom.

    Something significant began to happen.

Actors started moving away from intensity and towards complexity.

Self-criticism began to give way to self-awareness.

Their relationship with story became richer. Their relationship with character and scene partners became more responsive. And pleasure and enjoyment began to return to both their work and their lives.

The regulated nervous system creates an actor who can orient themselves, someone who can become present to their own experience and to the world around them, and create from that place

    Helena's Holistic Approach to Acting:

The Creative Path™: The Actor’s Practice to the Integrated Actor has developed through Helena’s thirty years of working with actors across stage and screen.

Her work draws inspiration from Fitzmaurice Voicework®, Organic Intelligence® and Neurosystemics™, alongside decades of exploration of the somatic, physiological and neurological dimensions of the creative process.

At its foundation are four principles:

    Stability. Support. Pleasure. Play.

The practice brings the creative mind and creative body into relationship with story, other people, the natural world and the intelligence of the nervous system.

It asks a different question of the actor:

Not “How do I make myself perform?”

But “How do I create the conditions in which my creativity can emerge?”

     Discover your original process

There is no single creative process that every actor needs to reproduce.

Helena works with each actor to discover their original process, the conditions that allow their particular imagination, body, perception and creativity to come alive.

Rather than becoming increasingly dependent on external validation or perfect conditions, you begin developing greater creative autonomy.

    You learn what supports you.

    You learn how you work.

And you learn how to return to yourself when the industry inevitably becomes disorienting.

At the centre of the practice are three interconnected phases:

  • REBALANCE - Creative Sense of Self:

Rebalance begins with the relationship between your creative mind and creative body.

Through imagination, sensation, the senses, feeling and meaning, you will explore your different channels of perception and learn how to open them through pleasure, ease and comfort.

For your acting, this creates greater specificity, nuance and subtlety in how you experience the story.

For your life and career, it gives you a different way of relating to experiences such as anxiety, imposter syndrome and the inner critic, allowing them to become information and creative material rather than obstacles you must defeat.

As your system becomes more balanced, you have more capacity available for creativity and play.

  • RESTORE - Creative Identity

Restore asks what actually sustains you as an artist.

You will explore how to build a resourced creative practice rooted in relationship, community, rest and the natural world — creating a way of working that feels congruent with who you are.

Within your acting, you will discover a different relationship with story, opening up new layers and dimensions in your storytelling.

The aim is not simply to keep producing.

It is to create an artistic life capable of sustaining the artist who is doing the producing.

  •  REMEMBER - Creative Source

Remember is about rediscovering flow, freedom and play.

As these qualities become more available in your life, auditions, filming and performance can begin to feel different too.

Instead of treating an audition purely as a presentation or test, you can experience it as a moment of exploration.

Instead of needing to know exactly what will happen between Action! and Cut!, you develop the capacity to enjoy the mystery of it.

You begin to receive what each moment offers you and allow it to lead you into the next.

Acting becomes an ongoing exploration and alchemy of the here and now.

  •  A System of Care for the Artist!

The acting industry can be exhilarating.

It can also be profoundly disorienting.

The Actor’s Practice offers another possibility: a system of care for the artist that supports the freedom of the actor.

Through nervous system regulation, sensory awareness, voice, story and embodied creative practice, you will develop greater internal stability, trust and creative autonomy.

This work is not about imposing another technique upon you.

It is about noticing what is already there and learning how to include it, trust it and create from it.

So that you can walk into the room with a practice beneath you.

    Meet the story with curiosity.

    Risk more.

    Listen more deeply.

    Play in the unknown.

And create from a place that feels unmistakably your own.

This work is for actors ready to challenge conventions, rediscover their artistic power, and create deeper, more meaningful performances. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a dedicated student, this experience is designed to elevate your craft.

Helena has taught me so much about my inner world. How to be human is truly the art of acting. She teaches how to access, identify and transform emotions into conscious expression.. Weekly voice, acting and embodiment masterclasses

You meet with Helena once a week every Sunday from 11am to 6pm for voice, body, character integration work and nervous system regulation work for eight weeks. The work is inspired by Fitzmaurice Voicework®, Organic Intelligence® and Neurosystemics™ and works from the principles of stability, support, pleasure and play. 1:1 Organic Intelligence sessions with Helena

Nervous system regulation

Organic Intelligence® (OI) is a framework that teaches individuals to regulate their nervous system in order to promote optimal functioning and well-being. For actors, OI can be especially important for a few reasons:

  1. Emotional Regulation: Acting can be an emotionally demanding profession, and you may need to tap into intense emotions in order to convincingly portray a character. However, this can also lead to burnout, exhaustion, or emotional dysregulation. OI can help you to learn how to regulate your emotions in a healthy way, so that you can perform at your best without being overwhelmed.

  2. Presence: A great actor is able to fully inhabit a character and bring them to life on stage or screen. This requires a high degree of present-moment awareness and mindfulness. OI can help you to develop these skills, allowing you to stay fully engaged in the moment and bring a greater sense of authenticity to your performances.

  3. Resilience: Acting is a competitive field, and you may face rejection, criticism, or other setbacks in your career. OI can help you to build resilience and maintain a positive outlook, so that you can bounce back from these challenges and continue to pursue your goals.

MY LAST PIECE OF ADVICE

In practice, we open space for story to happen.

Being in story requires experiencing it, which is very different to analysing it.  For stories to emerge imbued with complexity, you need to offer your body the initial conditions of safety and pleasure - so then you can risk and discover and surrender to the unknown.  Trusting your embodied imagination reveals the story to you - so you and the audience are constantly surprised.  We practice until it happens.
